Attainment of Androgyny

This brief article describes the state of androgyny as defined in very early writings of many different religions and philosophies. It includes references to how it can be obtained and its rewards. It is followed by a true story of how one couple utilized the ancient teachings for their perfection. The referenced techniques and philosophies can be found in books available at this site.

There is a persistent belief in our society that you are either male or female. There is, however, almost nothing said about the benefits of being both.

Many of the Gods of the Eastern religions were androgynous, and many consider that the early God of the Garden of Eden was androgynous who made both man and woman in his/her own image. Plato described the original nature of man as including the androgynous form. Darwin pointed to an androgynous ancestry in mammals, since males contain undeveloped or rudimentary female organs, and perhaps males and females both shared in the nursing of infants. Modern science has well established that males and females both start out as females in the uterus and only in the final stage within the womb is the male characteristics added to the female to form the male.

Science also is aware that many infants are born with combined or androgynous sexual characteristics, but the infant is quickly subjected to “corrective” surgery to form the “proper” sex. A rising interest is now taking place in the question of gender identification versus the major sexual characteristics or the variance of an inner feeling of sexual identity that may be different from the outer sex. Unfortunately, the chief goal of society and institutions, despite the above evidence, is to identify with one sex rather than to consider androgyny. As an example, infants who are born with combined or androgynous sexual characteristics are quickly subjected to corrective surgery to form the “proper” sex.

The modern liberal view is that both male and female characteristics (excluding procreative characteristics) are to be abolished in the creation of equality. Men and women should be considered as absolute equals in all of the opportunities offered by society. This loss of sexual characteristics, however, is in direct opposition to the androgynous state, wherein the individual has both strong male and female characteristics. Androgyny is also quite different from the popular concept of being unisexual which consists of having only sexual characteristics that are common to both sexes.

The attainment of androgyny can start with an adult who retouches their prepubescent or “third sex” feelings and perfects the source of those feelings. Adults suppress and forget the marvelous feelings associated with the perineum and lower abdomen of early childhood. The strong sexual-like feelings in that region are aroused with such things as holding your breath, twirling, dropping such as in a swing or teeter totter, or with pressure against the sensitive spot above the perineum. It can also be obtained from either inner muscle tensions or movement or from external rubbing, pounding, or tickling. The feelings are further enhanced with the attainment of the mental state of surrendering to a higher power. This is exemplified with children’s games in which they are overpowered by others such as being captured and held prisoner or in falling under a magical spell or in dying wherein the child must fall down to the ground and be as if dead. It is also exemplified in playing “ring around the rosie” that depicts the onset of the black or bubonic plague with its ring around the rosie or bubo and falling down dead. Most adults in their fear of dying have, of course, long forgotten the joys of childhood dying.

The denial and suppression of this prepubescent third sexual response indicates the power of political and religious views. Our modern society concentrates upon attempting to find the existence of normal adult sexual responses to insure the concept of the mono-sexual nature of a child as either totally male or female. Little Johnny is equated with being like his Daddy in wanting to have power over girls or Mary is like Mommy in wanting to be admired by the boys. Young children are dressed and encouraged to act like sexually active or motivated adults. Children caught rubbing their sexual region are considered to be preparing for masturbation rather than finding any pre-sexual joy. Within the framework of the present sexual view, prepubescent children are even being accused of sexual harassment when they touch their opposite sex playmates, and teachers and child care givers must prevent such behavior or face litigation. Despite the threat of being accused of child molestation or sexual harassment, adults fortunately still continue to directly stimulate children in such activities ranging from rubbing their tummies to letting the child ride their foot or bounce on their knee.

The rapid evolution of children as they learn to cope with their world can be attributed to the special energy that is generated with the above stimulation of a child. An indirect support for this concept is found with the lack of body stimulation of infants that results in abnormal development or even death. Direct support for the power of this special energy is evidenced by adults who learn to reestablish and experience the wonderful feeling of this energy and find the transformational power associated with it.

Individuals who have experienced the intense increase in their mental and physical capabilities such as found under traumatic conditions or when facing an extreme demand report the existence of the same lower abdominal sexual-like feelings found in childhood. Individuals who have sought deep religious experiences have likewise found the same sexual-like feelings as have those who seek a deeper sexual orgasm. This special energy is found to lie beneath and supply the power for the sexual energy found in both women and men. Sexual foreplay, as well as invigorating excitement such as found in facing some challenge danger or demand, are common sources of stimulation for the production of this special energy.

The source of this energy is described in ancient Yoga, martial arts and other disciplines as coming up from the lower abdomen or lower belly. Ancient Yoga gives a model for this area that is perhaps the closest to that which is experienced during its production and manifesting. This model starts with a description of an organ described as a yoni (a term also used to describe a woman’s pudenda) that is associated with the vagina in women and in the same place in men but hidden beneath the male perineum. Portions of the yoni, called the kanda, can swell considerably when properly stimulated. This kanda extends to the surface of the perineum in both men and women and is manifested by a swelling that results in the formation of a tube-like protuberance that runs from behind the clitoris or penis back to the anus. The kanda when developed will have a thickness or diameter reaching up to two inches and is quite observable. During the initial development the kanda is very soft and easily pressed back although once more fully developed is able to exert considerable controllable outward pressure.

Within the yoni also lies another erectile organ called the Shiva linga (penis of Shiva). This organ when erect becomes quite firm and hard and extends outward from the yoni. This extension outward from a vagina or yoni of a penis-like structure is depicted in Hinduism as the Shiva linga icon found in most Hindu temples[1]. This lingam is felt and observed by some men and women after intense sexual excitement (without orgasm) or external demand. Ancient texts describe that the special energy (kundalini) lies coiled around this organ and much of early Yoga was directed toward the stimulation of the Shiva linga and the release of the special energy resulting in ecstasy as well as special powers. The early Tantra Yoga (not the modern popular orgasmic variation) used non-coital perineal contact between partners as part of the practice.

The development of the kanda is associated with the rise in very feminine sensations and characteristics that result in the increased union with others and sensuality of the body and senses. The development of the Shiva linga results in the increase in very strong masculine characteristics that forms a very directed drive toward a chosen goal and the attainment of the powers required to attain it. As the kanda is maintained, the body becomes softer, the breasts and nipples develop and become sensitive and active, the senses become more sensitive and the mind becomes more open. As the linga becomes maintained, the muscles become more efficient, limber, and quicker to respond; physical energy is increased; endurance is increased; and the mind becomes more analytical and directed.

The resulting individual, with the developed third sexual powers or with the kanda and Shiva linga, becomes truly androgynous with the physical characteristics of both sexes that in their union produce the source of ecstasy and power over the world.

[1] Modern Hindus are not taught of the possibility of individuals manifesting the Linga but worship the Icon as representing the creative power of an external God. This can be compared with Christians who deny an inner God and recognize only an external God.
